The fine print
- What this compares. your current average power bill of $325 a month, raised 20% for year one to $390, against your solar payment of $261.00 a month, over 25 years. From year two the utility is escalated at 7.5% per year, solar at 2.99% per year.
- Still connected to the grid. You are still connected to the utility grid and would be expected to pay a small fixed monthly rate, considered the standard connection fee.
- Dominion Energy rates are moving. Virginia regulators approved a $565.7 million base rate increase for 2026 and a further $209.9 million for 2027, about $8.51 a month more for a typical residential customer from January 2026 and roughly $2 a month more from January 2027. On top of that, customers are absorbing about $10 a month for unrecovered fuel costs and about $13 a month tied to Virginia rejoining the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative. Dominion’s Virginia fuel costs have risen nearly 90% as data center demand grows, and the company filed for another increase in September 2026. Past increases do not guarantee future ones.
